About Återstod
Återstod is Swedish for “remainder.”
Återstod is an independent search engine with no ads, no trackers and no sponsored links. It builds its own index by following links across the open web and keeps a record of every link it sees.
- No cookies or tracking on public pages, no third-party scripts. We never store IP addresses with searches; at most we keep anonymous day-level counts of search terms for a few weeks (see privacy).
- Pages are summarized and tagged; media links (images, video, audio, documents) are listed, not copied.
- Access to information is the default. Content that harms others (malware, phishing, doxxing, credible incitement) is hidden; sensitive content is labeled, not removed. Content that exploits minors is blocked and never stored.
- Our crawler respects robots.txt and crawl-delay: about AterstodBot.
Transit arrivals and service alerts. New York City subway answers use the MTA's public real-time feeds (GTFS-realtime) and its published schedule data (GTFS), plus the MTA Subway Stations list from data.ny.gov for direction labels. Our server downloads the MTA data and serves it from our server (cached for 30 seconds); your browser never contacts the MTA. This app is not licensed by or affiliated with the MTA. The information may not be real time and is not guaranteed to be accurate, complete or timely. See the MTA data feed terms. Boston (subway, Green Line, Mattapan, commuter rail): data provided by MassDOT (MBTA GTFS and GTFS-realtime), under the MassDOT Developers License Agreement. Bay Area: BART schedule and real-time data, provided as is under the BART Developer License Agreement. Same rules for all three: our server fetches and caches the data, your browser never contacts the agencies, we use no agency logos or line symbols, and this site is not affiliated with or endorsed by any of them. San Francisco Muni isn't included (its real-time feed requires an API key).
Other instant answers and their sources. Places (city names and US ZIP codes) are looked up on our server in a bundled copy of GeoNames (cities over 15,000 people and US postal codes, CC BY 4.0). Weather: Open-Meteo.com (data CC BY 4.0). Currency: the European Central Bank's daily euro reference rates, downloaded once a day. Crypto prices: CoinGecko (Coinbase's public spot price as a fallback). Our server makes these requests: your browser never contacts these services, and they never see your IP address. We only send coordinates rounded to about 10 km, and answers are cached for a few minutes. Sunrise, sunset, moon phase, holidays and colors are computed on our server without any outside service. “What's my IP” and “my user agent” are answered from your own request; those queries are not logged and the page isn't cached.
Dictionary answers (“define …”, “… meaning”) come from Open English WordNet 2025 (J. P. McCrae et al.; based on Princeton WordNet), used under the CC BY 4.0 license and bundled with the site, so a lookup never leaves our server. Pronunciations are IPA as given in that dataset.
“Hide big sites” uses the Tranco list of the top 1 million domains (V. Le Pochat et al., “Tranco: A Research-Oriented Top Sites Ranking Hardened Against Manipulation,” NDSS 2019), refreshed weekly. Subdomains count as their site (en.wikipedia.org is wikipedia.org).
